In Reply to: RE: Okay, who was the greater composer, Prokofiev or Shostakovich? posted by Mali on May 02, 2021 at 18:14:30
It is arguably one of these most subjective qualities. I very much prefer Prokofiev. I'd put him in my top 5 amoung all favorite composers. I would not rate him as one of the 5 "greatest" composers of all time though. In my subjective opinion "greatness" is about more than just excellence.
Follow Ups:
- Rimsky
- Rachmaninoff
- Prokofiev
- Scriabin
- Schumann
It's very simple: they're my top five, therefore, they're the greatest! I mean, if everybody would just agree with me, we'd ALL be better off and the world would be a much better place! ;-)
Ooh. . . I'm sensing a new thread topic coming up. . .
although this being AA, we'll never reach a... consensus.

(I didn't want to leave out the happy face!) ;-)
way to phrase it.
Great
Very Good
Good
Fair
Poor
How many composers would have popular consensus as "great?" How many should, before that gets so watered down as to be meaningless? Was Scarlatti, "great?" Hindemith? Fauré? Satie?
