After all, it is the physical expression of music to the highest level and ability of the human form, the transformation of scratches on paper into grace in motion in three dimensions.
The costuming, set decorating, and pleasing human forms immeasurably add to the spectacle.
Follow Ups:
It's certainly one of mine - although I like actual ballet MUCH better! ;-)
Anyway, on to the more difficult side of things. . .
Here's a ballet discussion we had back in 2012:
Ugly film, as Aronofsky's usually are. I have found no redeeming value in his negativity. In this particular film, I also don't like the lead, so there's also that.
I've been able to "read between the lines" of your posts on the film asylum here, and I can tell that you have the hots for Natalie Portman! ;-)
on tv and movies is WAY OFF!
The only one that was even Close was
Copying Beethoven, about his Copyist.
Most are mean spirited in the extreme.
I couldn't watch that Black Swan movie!
Nobody understands how an Orchestra works,
from Law and Order to Mozart in the Jungle,
it's just terrible and Wrong.
. . . and more about psychology and troubled fantasy. Ballet was merely the vehicle.
I do agree with you about classical music movies in general. There are exceptions though. Although Ken Russell is mostly pretty bad (Lisztomania, anyone?), his first biopic, about Elgar, mostly kept to the facts in an interesting way. I also saw a Czech biopic of Smetana, in which Sviatoslav Richter had a cameo role as Franz Liszt - they did a good job with his make-up! Then there are a bunch of Soviet films about various Russian composers, including "The Great Glinka" which won a Stalin prize - what more could you want? ;-)
Connect the dots.
All classic music devotees should love most film scores too.

We've seen a lot of modern ballet NOT associated with classical music. The audiences can be a little different.OTOH, my wife dances ballet and my obsession with classical music definitely broadened its appeal for her beyond the narrow band of ballet music proper!:-)

I've played LOTS of Symphonic Music at the SF Ballet.

Eventually you make enough mistakes that you learn something and it looks like talent.

I find the dancing often looks silly and for me detracts from the music.
I did see a performance of the original choreography (Nijinsky) with the Joffrey Ballet and the Cleveland Orchestra (as the pit band!). Though I did find the dancing silly, I could understand those who said that the riot at the premiere was as much about the dancing as about the music.
I assume you mean the Rite of Spring.

Truer Words...
Yes! I can either mow the lawn or proofread, but I don't have enough energy for both. Guess which activity win?
