in 24/96--and it wasn't pleasant. The balance and intonation of the women's chorus seems a bit off and a tad shouty. And the men just can't seem to muster that last ounce of enthusiasm that one would expect in their paean to Khan Konchak."Islamey" is much better, a never-let-up-on-the-gas performance that nonetheless reverts appropriately to the reflectively lyrical where that matters.
I've yet to get to "Bare Mountain" and "Pictures." All I can say at this point is that hope springs eternal.

One of the best recordings of these Dances with chorus is that early Telarc CD with Shaw/Atlanta. Exciting performance, minimal miking, great sound.
I just played that CD this afternoon, though mostly for Shaw's Firebird Suite with the big bass drum: the beginning of Katschei's dance surprised my poor wife!

I saw Boulez conduct the Firebird Suite with the precision of the Cleveland Orchestra. A lot of people JUMPED at the beginning of Kastchei'sdance.
