My fingers and hands cringed as I watched her curl her fingers up and even collapse the arch of her palm. It astounds me that someone can pull off playing like that without a relaxed hand. I have work endless hours to relax my hands and fingers at the keyboard.

He noted that he had attended concerts by other pianists who were playing with what he considered incorrect technique. But then he realized that they seemed to be getting the results they wanted and the music actually sounded fine. So Ashkenazy told the interviewer that he began to ask himself, "Who am I to say that they played with the wrong technique?". ;-)I was actually impressed with Ashkenazy's humility in telling that little story.

When I say collapsed left wrist, I mean collapsed backwards, so that the neck of the violin is resting on the heel of the hand.
Of course, the early violin teaching I was subjected to was so Jurassic, that decades later, in adult life, I needed a bone graft in the bottom rear of my left jaw, to deal with the consequences.

. . . the thresholds on some instruments being somewhat higher than those on other instruments. Or, to put it another way, some instruments are more forgiving than others are.
BTW, I hope your bone graft operation turned out OK!
