try his Firebird, but then I've got Stavinsky's own Columbia stereo version, (woodwinds to the fore throughout), and Dutoit's, which I was supposed to burn but haven't yet. : )
Follow Ups:
of that piece so I will certainly look into that... My Beecham and Jansons recordings of the "Little Russian" are quite good but I will look at that as well... Thanks!**** I dumped all my Dutoit CD's some time ago including the much venerated "The Planets" (Lord only know why) and his Ravel which is also well liked... It's a meh for me.....

Bravo! ;-)
He now wears the "scarlet 'S'"..... Just like James Levine and Cleveland Orchestra concertmaster William Preucil...... Dutoit was one of my all-time favorite conductors, prior to the revelation.
I keep Dutoit's Planets for the nervous "col lengo battato" ticking at the beginning of Mars, (the recording really brings it out) and the deep organ pedal at the end of Saturn. Fantastic!
I recently downloaded the "legendary" Previn EMI Planets to see what all the fuss was/is about.
My favorite on Lp was one that has surprisingly gone under the radar: Solti's, which I found on a MFSL issue. IMHO best all around.
Never understood the Boult Planets fans.
As for Romeo and Juliet, Muti's Chicago recording is a knockout; you couldn't ask for better execution balanced with Italian passion, : ). Just a touch more mannerism than the earlier release with the Philly. Unfortunately just the suites.
Ozawa's with the Boston was my long-time favorite, and also Leinsdorf's "synthesis" with the same orchestra, the latter my imprint.
Never could get into the Maazel/Cleveland.
They really captured the kinetic energy of the orchestra on that recording.
ORG did a 2 album 45 rpm LP reissue of the Mehta and LA that is also a fine performance and a great LP.
Enjoy the music.
Berlioz' Romeo and Juliet, Muti's Philadelphia recording on EMI is also a knockout, and a wonderful recording.
The Planets. For me he is the only one that captures first the menacing scourge of war and in Jupiter (which is my favorite part of the piece) gets the tempo just right. I also like Roy Goodman's recording on (wait for it!) HIP instruments! It's really quite good. AFA Boult goes, I like his recording with the Vienna State Opera Orchestra. I read somewhere that it was his favorite out of all his recordings of the piece. In that recording, Venus and Saturn IMO are unsurpassed and hauntingly beautiful as they should be... The playing is rough in spots, but the performance is just wonderful and it is easy to hear why he liked it so....
