In Reply to: RE: Where is Solti's Mahler Symphony set in high res? posted by Dave Billinge on October 24, 2020 at 07:51:21
The problem for a complete set in hi-res is that some of the symphonies were recorded in early digital using Decca's built in house recorders which were 18 bit and later 20 bit, both @ 44.1 . So the only way of getting a, say, 24/96k set would be by faking it in part by padding and upsampling. Not acceptable from my way of looking at things but others may find that OK. So if not then you would need to reject the post 1980 CSO recordings.

It is worth noting that some of the early ones with the LSO were analogue surely? Wasn't that 1, 2 and 3, with 4 at the Concertgebouw?

" It is worth noting that some of the early ones with the LSO were analogue surely? ". Yes indeed. I think that I may have misinterpreted your post and thought that you meant a fully comprehensive set of all of his Mahler symphony recordings. Yes, the earlier recordings featuring LSO or RCO or CSO are analogue.

The standards for DVD-Audio were so open-ended that lots and lots of resolutions were supported - even on the same disc IIRC.
