First off, the recording quality is tailor-made for my tastes. All the attributes (real or faked, I don't care) that I mentioned during the Beechamgate Hearings are even more gratifying in this EMI release from '69.
Mov't I: Enter trumpet, right rear. Orchestral entrance spectacular and weighty. I really enjoyed wallowing in the low-brass grumbling that followed. Bass drum and gong get their due. Huge wing-span on the strings and no matter how loud or intense their sound, they never skid off the stage an into one's lap.
I don't want to say too much about the interpretation because I don't know the symphony that well. The first mov't left me completely bowled-over. The famous fourth mov't is lovely, and I found myself savoring the sweet strings; their sound never hardens, even in the brief climax. I very much enjoyed the smiling Finale and was not distracted by the slower tempi, which Chris mentioned.
As for the 2nd and portions of the 3rd movt's, perhaps the playing could have been a little more pointed, (penetrating? biting?) or emphatic? The big brass chorale is as warm and rounded as one could want, but not very momentous, IMHO. Timpani are a bit diffuse throughout.
Still, all-in-all a very satisfying Sun afternoon listen. The HDTT transfer, (DSD 128) sounded flawless to me.
Follow Ups:
At least so it says in the credits on Primephonic
Audirvana says its's 24/192 but who knows?
Remastered in 1998 and on QOBUZ courtesy of Warner Classics.
Will give a listen today.
So, I'm curious about the HDTT remastering.
