He's very good in some repertoire, but in other repertoire not so much.
I haven't heard this particular recording, and I'll probably take the chance and download it later today.
My two favorites in the Liszt Sonata are Khatia and Pogo - both very wild performances in their different ways. For something more middle of the road, I'd probably go for Nojima (Reference). Unlike you though, I like the Argerich recording too - I hear it not as out of control, but on the verge of being out of control, which makes it very exciting for me. Over the years though, I've found her recording perhaps a bit overly impetuous (e.g., paying hardly any heed to the long rest before the final slow section). I have the Zimerman recording too - it's another middle of the road performance, but not quite as interesting for me as the Nojima recording is. The only Horowitz performance I've heard is his famous old one from the 78 rpm era. It's good, but I've got to have better sound quality.
Follow Ups:
That Chandos release keeps popping up at 50% off.
Rave reviews.
Xiang Wang is not bad, but not at her best on this album IMHO. In the Corelli Variations, I prefer, Lugansky and Wild. Also, that old mono Angel/EMI recording by Ashkenazy (before he defected) is pretty outstanding too. His Decca/London recording has too much added girth for my taste. ;-)
