Sad to hear about the poor quality of the Ormandy. Those RCA productions coincide with my Lp "coming of age" in the mid to late 70s. Supermarkets, Five and Dimes, Woolworth's...no problem finding RCA Red Seals!
I purchased Ormandy's RCA Shosty 5th, Prokofiev 5th, Dvorak 9th and the Strauss "Also Sprach" advertised as an "awesome" sonic experience. Ah, memories.
In Munich, I purchased Ormandy's EMI Also Sprach, which is just a barn-burner, out of tune organ notwithstanding. They really tear into it.

And despite that Rubinstein/Ormandy recording, I'm still pretty tempted by them:
(Well, maybe the Shostakovich not so much!)
Yup, that was the Shostakovich. What 12 yo young man could pass over a cover illustration like that?? (My poor parents!)Those recordings sounded so good on my Sound Design stereo system.
