Knock himself out.
Literally.
Follow Ups:
I think he's performed in community orchestras on this instrument (again IIRC).
had a truly Awesome Gong.
There must be different sizes, for deeper Thwong and then the Decay which can take forever, if your'e lucky.
Really nice.
Also, on the one I heard, after a long Roll crescendoing to the Thwack, there was an extra blooming of the sound that came After that last whack, so full of overtones and Gong-Goodness.
Bong Goodnesss.
Of course I was glad to be on the Other side of the Pit...
I'm familiar with it because, for whatever reason, whenever the (UK) Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music sends out their examiners to the SF area, their auditions are always held in that store. There are some teachers and parents here who prefer the ABRSM examinations to the more common MTA (Music Teachers Association) or ASTA (American String Teachers Association) examinations. When you're waiting to go into the exam room (I'm often there as the piano accompanist to whichever of our many fine local babe violinists is auditioning), you sometimes get seated near all the gongs - and you have to have a lot of self control to restrain yourself from getting up and whacking the daylights out of those things! ;-)
