"Maybe it's because I don't care for faster / really fast Beethoven readings, but the Jr. Kleiber performances have never done anything for me..."
I thought I was the only one who had this sentiment...... Although for me, it's not just with Beethoven, but other composers as well.......
Follow Ups:
though there are times where I do feel that his tempos are almost lethargic and too slow. What is so horrible with Celi though is the fact that ALL of the recordings are live and I HATE the interference of background noise. I guess what I really like is tempos that make sense... if the music moves fast than so should the tempo but at appropriate speed. I found the linked video helpful in which conductors readings I felt I wanted to explore. You might too. For me there was less than a half dozen that I was interested in... I have said before recently that the Blomstedt / Dresden set that I bought IMO gets it just right. Wonderfully recorded with great performances. IF it can be better than that I have yet to hear it.....

was Previn/LSO set clocking at whopping 42 minutes!
Previn seems totally lost the plot as if he's sight reading all the way through.
More a fan of his film scores and jazz compositions than his conducting... I NEVER attended any of his concerts when he was the director here in Los Angeles...he is / was boring IMHO...
Always do right. It will please some people and astonish the rest.

He made some wonderful recordings, including the first uncut Rach Symphony 2, Vaughan Williams symphonies, Prokofiev and Rach concertos with Ashkenazy, a very fine Prokofiev Classical Symphony with LA, excellent Gershwin with Pittsburgh, Barber and Korngold violin concertos with Shaham, Prokofiev Romeo and Cinderella, Bartok Violin Concerto 2 with Perlman, Britten Spring Symphony, his first recording of Shostakovich 5, walton 1, and I could go on.
And Walton Symphony 1, which has never been matched let alone surpassed.
