I was just thinking of non-Mahler conductors who would have been great with Mahler.... Aside from Klemperer, Celibidache came to mind.

There's a live performance of Songs of a Wayfarer in circulation; Celibidache conducts, the singer is Brigitte Fassbaender. It's very slow (surprise, surprise).
