In Reply to: RE: Did Klemperer ever record Mahler's 1st symphony? posted by John N on June 03, 2020 at 20:24:35
I'd love to listen to Klemperer do the Mahler One, if such recording exists...... That would be a match in heaven......
Same goes for Celibidache, for that matter.........
Follow Ups:
Perhaps it was because Celibidache started out in pure math... but I have read that Celi was unattracted to most of Mahler's large works because he found them lacking in comprehensible form.
He was quoted as saying something along the lines of, "Mahler knows how to start a movement but he can't decide how to finish it." (Quoted from memory.)
The only work that AFAIK Celi performed was Kindertotenlieder. Which, btw, was the occasion of the worst Valentine's-Day date of my young life.
(Memo to self: Research the orchestral program first. AND WHO WAS THE EINSTEIN WHO PROGRAMMED KTNLD FOR FEB. 14 ?????)
I link below to a wonderful audio-only YT--doesn't Fassbaender at least a little call to mind Kathleen Ferrier?

If I'm not mistaken, Fritz Reiner had a similar opinion of Anton Bruckner...... I don't think Reiner conducted anything by that composer.
Reiner never recorded anything by Bruckner - I went looking a few years back. He was scheduled to record Bruckner 6th but his illness prevented any of the performances that would have preceded the recording.
He conducted a Bruckner 8 while in Pittsburgh.
BTW - in as careful searches of discographies as I was able, there is no Klemperer Mahler 1 (alas)

I was just thinking of non-Mahler conductors who would have been great with Mahler.... Aside from Klemperer, Celibidache came to mind.
There's a live performance of Songs of a Wayfarer in circulation; Celibidache conducts, the singer is Brigitte Fassbaender. It's very slow (surprise, surprise).
I like my Mahler "slow"...... [-;
