In Reply to: I have a pair of the DIY Quattro Fil here right now & the real QF too. posted by blazter on July 11, 2002 at 17:08:37:
Hey Blazter....Thanks for the info.I might buy a .6 mtr pair used to make the same comparison.I've used Nordost cables for a couple years now starting with Blue Heaven and now SPM Speaker.I hope they don't mind us guys tweaking thier stuff but I'm also gonna DIY some Quatro speaker cable.

I think that may be the real test of this El Dorado DIY endeavor. No Doubt the QF are slightly better an IC. However, I have had three different sources tell me that when they compared the DIY QF to the SPM IC the DIY beat it hands down. So imagine a couple 6 foot power cords turnded SPEAKER CABLE! Yikes! My thinking is should be able to use a single 6 foot power cord per speaker, correct? That would be the same as the IC where you would use one leg of PC for positive and the other for negative, but what do you do w/ the grounded shield? Stick at the amp end?My friend that made mine is now going to try making a set using the Eichmann Bullet plugs! I bet those will possibly close the gap completely b/w DIY & QF? Any thoughts on trying those?

I'm not familiar with the Eichmann plugs and yes one cord per side.I like the WBT crimp system and spades for which I have the WBT crimp sleeves and tools to do the job, really the best interface I've used, ultra solid and no solder.Where can I get a look at the Eichmann I have heard goodthings about 'em.Oh and regarding the shield I've pondered that and it could be an advantage and like you thought I would connect it on the neg. side at the amp end only just like a shielded IC......I've seen some other guys that think they need to strip off the outer blue jacket,no way I'd say, that would definetly ruin the cable.

I will do a search for the Eichmann site. Many DIY sites though are selling the RCAs, and they are CHEAP! I don't believe they make a spade yet, but I could be wrong. Either way, those WBT are great connectors. My friend too thought of removing the blue PVC jacket then inserting the internal wires in some very high quality Teflon. He hasn't done so yet b/c they sound so good as is and removing the jacket would most likely affect the sound, whether for the better or worse is the BIG question. I don't see though how removing the wires and at least mummy wrapping them w/ good Teflon tape would hurt, unless Nordost has some special damping going on?
Actually, the blue jackets look pretty cool! They retain a squiggly appearance when seperated from where they were twisted together as a pair for so long. I will one day see if there is any effect from keeping them seperated or placing them back together. ;~)
