How many strands do i really need?As many as it takes! :-) It really depends on your systems. If your runs are short, 9 pairs should be enough. If you have longer runs and/or high power amps w/low impedance speakers, then you'll need more. Just keep gauging up until you are satisfied.
Good luck.
I have been experimenting with number of strands. I have 92db efficient Diatone (16 ohm) full range speakers and a 55 watt AKSA power amp. I have found that four pair work the best for me. I moved up to 16 pair, but all of the "life" disappeared (sort of an upper mid range suckout).
I found that especially when bi-wiring that it is necesary to get the speakers dialed-in with the proper ga. It was amazing what a difference too little or too much AWG on the HF made. For high efficiency speakers or lower powered amps, it doesn't surprise me that even single wiring would be fussy about the total AWG. Enjoy.
