I'm planning on making a set of ICs with some soldering assistance from a friend of mine, and was wondering about the configuration. I was thinking about a star-quad; either two 28 gauge + and two - in an alternating wind, or one 28 gauge and one 26 in each direction. Or perhaps I should wind the positives in one direction and the negatives in the other so the conductors of opposite polarity cross each other at roughly a right angle. The same question about the gauges would apply.
What say ye, and perhaps more importantly, why?

There were IC with the 'right angle' type wrapped around a hollow core. Those seemed to have vanished. (XLO if I remember rightly)
Star quad is a basic well regarded form in pro circles.
The four wires of star quad should all be identical, and tightly wrapped or wrapped over to hold the wires in proper position.Hand made it is hard to get a proper relationship between the wires.
My own efforts worked out best when I allowed the wires to self form (IE not stressing them, but letting them lay as they were as i made up the twisted form) wrapping them on each other with a gentle twist of the entire quad.. Redoing it tightening the quad more than once. Then finally wrapping it up with Teflon plumbers tape to keep them in relationship. As four wires without insulation tend to not 'stay' square, but flop into a rhomboid.. which tends to defeat the star quad purpose. With a wrapping, the wires keep to square better, or are able to be easily re-squared up.. and hold.
