With power cables, can they just be plugged in or does the unit they connect to the power have to be on and running. I don't want to run my tube equip for hours to break them in. Also what about silver interconnects...same question.

Follow Ups:
The dielectric of the wire needs to have signal runnig thru it for the dielectric of the wire to be conditioned (or burned in).
Yes, it is actually the dielectric of the cable that needs a break in period. The better the dielectric the less time it takes. Anywhere from 20-300 hours.

Me? I have never heard the difference in breaking in of any cable. I plug it in and listen. There are days when my system sounds better than others. Atmospheric conditions, humidity or whatever. The cables seem to be immune to this and I personally never noticed a difference in sound between installing new cables or listening many hours later.

I tested this theory by constructing two identical powercords using DHLabs cable. Using an adapter I ran my refrigerator on one cable for a week. I marked the one that was broken in with a tape on its male connector as "A", the other one as "B".Then I had both powercords plugged in to a power conditioner strip. By blindly switching between the powercords, and playing tracks that I was familiar with, I was able to pick out the broken in cord ("A") about 80% of the time correctly (a lot depended on the music being played). I also wrote down my impressions. The broken-in cord sounded smoother with better bass definition and top end extension. The un broken-in cord ("B") sounded more congested and aggresive.
I am convinced that this is a real phenomenon.

I know what you mean but I just got some silver IC's from Signal Cable and they sound a little harsh and fatiguing. They told me they should smooth out with 50-100 hrs. If they don't I'm selling them as they don't sound as good overall as my DH Labs.

Use an adapter to connect your AC cord to the AC cord of your referigerator. Good burn-in method.

You will want to have the equipment running certainly in the case of the interconnects.
