Hello All,
I've enjoyed reading many of the posts here and want to thank the group for providing this newbie with a wealth of information. Forgive me if this question has been asked before. I suspect that it has but my searching has proved futile, so here goes.
When using a CDP player that has balanced outs (Electrocompanient), and a Pre with balanced ins, but the amp is just rca's ..... is it useless to run balanced from the CDP to the PRE, then RCA's to the AMP? Will I reap any of the benifits or should I just wait until I get an AMP with balanced inputs?
Thanks so much for your thoughts.

I have a similar situation. I have xlr balanced outs (and single ended) on my DAC, but single ended connections only on my preamp.I have them connected by single ended interconnect at the moment, but have a better quality balanced cable in the cupboard gathering dust.
Would there be any advantage or disadvantage in using the balanced cables out of the DAC and using XLR to RCA adapters into the preamp?

No matter how you use it, with adaptor ir RCAs on one end, it will function just like a single ended, unbalanced, cable. In addition to that some balanced outputs can be noisy is not used correctly, IE feeding a single ended input. One phase 8amplifier) is not being used.
I wouldn't bother there is little chance it will sound better and a chance it will sound worse.

I assume your preamp has an unbalanced output for the unbalanced amp? If you have a balanced cable for the CD > > preamp connection use it if not don't bother. The cable is generally the same the additional cost for a balanced is due to the connectors.

truly balanced, which simply means each has equal impedances to ground from both the normal and inverted signal pins. This is independent of other connections in the system. In your setup, if the CDP and preamp are both truly balanced, then you will get improved performance from using balanced cables from the CDP to the preamp, then single-ended from the preamp to your power amp, compared to running all single-ended, as long as the cables are of similar quality.
The thing to be aware of is that much expensive home audio gear sports XLR connectors but does not have equal impedances from the two signal pins to ground. This means you should confirm that your equipment is truly balanced before you invest money and time in balanced cables. Unless you get a screaming deal on a set of cables, don't waste time and money on using balanced cables from the preamp to the power amp before you get a power amp with truly balanced inputs. There are adapters, but using them defeats much of the benefit.
