Yes, of course!! I won't know fur sure until I solder them in! :)
However, I'm worried about damaging my board if i'm constantly changing capacitors... thought it would be nice to get some opinions here first...
The copper PIO caps that blew were actually made by AN- this was verified by AN and Jensen. Luckily, AN UK has offered to replace them with the new (Mylar, I think) caps.
I'm wondering if the smaller value AN alu caps were reliable... I'm probably paranoid, but I'm worried about them blowing... and damaging other components.
Follow Ups:
If it was me, I would look to Mundorfs or if you can afford it, the V-Cap Teflons. I have swopped al of my AN caps out for V-Caps, and the sound is more transparent with stronger dynamics and bass.
I do think Peter sorted the issues with the newer Mylar caps though, but by then I was fed up with 3 x failure situations. In my case it led to DC leaking through to the volume pot (static noise). Thankfully didn't blow any tubes!
BTW the Mundorfs and the V-Caps are VERY load and heat tolerant, important in a Valve amp IMHO. Go Mundorfs if you are tight on money. The V-Caps are REAL nice though, and remember, the cap change will alter the sound more than tubes or interconnects or resistors. For me it was the better.
Yes! I already changed out my signal coupling caps (C7-C10) with Mundorf Silver/Oils last week... I liked the sound initially, but now I am in that 300-hour burn-in and they are pretty bright. I think I will like the sound (and reliability) once they are burned-in.
However, my question is about the DC/ high frequency filtering caps (C1-C4)... do they affect the sound?
those caps are used to filter out high frequencies outside the audible range - they are located between high voltage HT and ground - do they make a difference to sound? The amp will work fine without them - possibly you might be able to tell the sonic difference without them vs with them but the type of capacitor will not make a big difference - you basically dont want to put in expensive caps in these positions - you want caps that are very robust and can handle a constant 450v DC- Brian Smith
Thanks Brian! I'll solder in those 1000v Solen metalized polyprop. I think they will probably be more robust than PIO caps!
