Go for a Bendix Red Bank rectifier and get the best volume control you can afford. At least a TKD 2P-2511S. Stick to 100k impedance for the volume control.

I've used the Bendix 5852 rectifier tube in my AN L3 and like it very much. Clear, detailed and musical.
Regarding volume controls, the TKD is a fine choice. For a stepped attenuator I can recommend the Goldpoint. Excellent channel balance.
Thanks for the replies and suggestions. I have purchased a NIB Bendix 5852 tube and it is on its way. I have been considering building the Goldpoint Custom using Dale 1% resistors. Has anybody built one of these using these or other resistors?
Please keep the suggestions coming.
I think you'll like the Bendix. FYI, the Bendix 5852 takes longer to heat up than other 6X5GT types when the pre-amp is turned on. Give it a minute or two to do so before you turn on your amp, otherwise you'll hear some buzzing. It should be silent once the tube is fully warmed up.
