In Reply to: Finest CD play back under $4K? posted by J North on January 24, 2004 at 20:25:56:
Regarding the context of my post, I don't think you'll get better CD playback for under 4K. The context of my post details the direct digital input that bypasses the need for an expensive DAC, pre-amp and interconnects. Those alone will save you close to 3K. What you have left in the choice of amps for 1K is rather limiting.I've listened to some expensive rigs and they do some things better than the Panny. For example you listed a Vac Avatar. The Avatar is a wonderful sounding amp depending on the material. It does magical things with jazz and chamber but can be down right claustrophobic with large orchestral numbers. Not to mention the bass is loose as all get out. I'd still like one for listening to jazz.... a good used one is $1800. Regarding CDPs. I've heard a lot. I'm using a Jolida JD100 currently as my transport. To be honost I've haven't been overly impressed with it. It's great as a transport but the tube D/A section is overly homogenized to my ears. I've heard the high end Cary CDPs as well which left me wanting. System Synergy is key which is another reason the Panny is so great. All it needs is to get along with your speakers and your set.
Digital Amplification I'm sure still has a ways to go but to my ears its already surpassed solid state in a lot of areas. Its a bit shrill on the high end but the music just gels so much better staying true to the recording.

Follow Ups:
Okay, I'll try the uber-crazy seperates route:DAC: AckDack, SN TubeDac, or Benchmark DAC 1 - $500 to $700
Transport: Modded Pioneer 563A or 45a - $500 to $600
Pre-amp: Bent Audio NOH, Sonic Euphoria PLC, EE Minimax, Marsh P2000x, AES DH1 - $1200
Digital Cable - DH Labs or Stereovox - $100
Interconnects (4) - Bolder M-80 - $200
Subtotal = $2600
Leaves $1400 for an amp. See following thread for any number of great amps for under $1500:

Thank you for clarifying the context of your post. I do not understand why you are limiting the XR45's (an integrated HT receiver) sonic competition to seperates (transport,"expensive" Dac,preamp,amp)."Its a bit shrill on the high end" is exactly what Enzo, Nietchze, I and a few others are hearing as well with the Panny xr45. A few others do not seem to find this in their systems for whatever reason. I can not accept an amp with this quality as being anywhere near the "finest" at $1k and under, nevermind $4k and under.
As we all should understand, audio is about personal preferences and synergies. I like the XR45 at its price point and think it is a great HT receiver. It did not outdo the Unico Integrated paired with the Sony XE670 in my system. That is about $1500 worth of gear. I was really hoping the XR45 would meet all its hype in my system so I can sell my equipment and buy a lot of beer or something. I am still very sober.
back to the music . . . .
