In Reply to: RE: Has anyone done an in-home audition then returned the product ? posted by AbeCollins on October 09, 2020 at 12:45:06
When I still resided in my native New Jersey, I had access to several high-end dealers in NJ, NYC, and PA. But where I now reside in Florida requires purchasing audio gear online. I miss borrowing demo gear for a home audition.Since 2017 I have made numerous online purchases and have returned for a refund one preamp, two integrated amplifiers, three CD players, one CD transport, and three phono preamps. One of the integrated amps and two of the phono preamps were defective.
Also, I bought a solid-state preamp from Cary Direct. After an in-home trial I traded it in for their SLI-80 tube integrated amp, which I kept and enjoy immensely (after replacing all the stock Electro-Harmonix tubes). The folks at Cary were exceptionally helpful, including well after the purchase with general questions.
Returns for all the components mentioned were easy and problem-free. The only penalty was return UPS costs (shipments to my home were free).
Despite enormous online research via reading magazine reviews and forum posts prior to making a purchase, many times the sonics of a product are disappointing and worse than the component I was attempting to upgrade. I always feel a bit guilty for not keeping a product, but returns are often necessary.
My favorite dealers, from which I have received hassle-free refunds with no restocking fees, are Audio Advisor, Music Direct, ListenUp Audio, Crutchfield, and Amazon.

My experience parallels yours but for dates and specific store names. If I run into resistance after being proffered a right of return, I insist on the right & then avoid that dealer in future.

I buy audio products only from dealers that have a refund policy in writing.
Just curious, what did you replace the E-H's with? Thx...
I replaced one tube type at a time trying to eliminate an upper midrange edginess. The problem lessened after each replacement but did not go away completely until all the E-H tubes were gone. All the "small" tubes now are new old stock. I alternate between Amperex 6DJ8s and Matsushita/National 7DJ8s, and utilize RCA 6SN7 GTA blackplates (short glass), and RCA 5U4GB blackplate rectifier tubes. Power tubes are current production Tung-Sol KT120s. The resulting sonics are exceptional smoothness, superb detail, and a rich and warmish tonality. I love it.
