But shortly after I did, Ed Shilling from The Horn Shoppe came out with his "The Truth" line stage (details at the preceding link). I ordered one, knowing I could send it back if I wasn't satisfied, but after trying it, it wasn't going anywhere. My B1 kit is still sitting in the box, unassembled.
At least five years later, and Ed finally got his Truth reviewed (link below) by someone other than his customers who had bought one. Funny the effect an exemplary professional review has. Word is that Ed works hard keep up with the demand.
Even if you aren't interested in The Truth, there's a lot of good information about active vs. passive line stages, etc. in the review.
Follow Ups:
I have had "The Truth" for about 6 months and it is easily the best preamp I have owned.

.
I was an early adopter of The Truth, and at the time I bought mine, they came with a captive power cord. My understanding is that they now come with the ubiquitous IEC jack, allowing use of the power cord of one's choice.
I have mine on a stable support. If I recall, I tried cones, or Sorbothane pucks underneath it, but never noticed any difference.
The one mod I do plan to do at some point is to replace the generic +/- 15 VDC regulators in The Truth's power supply with Belleson Regulators . Replacing a generic 7818 regulator inside my Graham Slee Reflex X phono stage (my review below) had a dramatic effect, larger than any cable change I've ever made, so I'd like to try them in my Truth.
I'll probably install an IEC jack while I'm in there, but anticipate a much greater improvement with the Belleson Super Power regulators.
Internal grounding to the chassis of the IEC jack I would think of as a mod, but in my system the ground is connected directly to the power supply, and have no hum issue.
The other three, a support, an "other than stock" power cord, and a weight added to the chassis, I would consider tweaks rather than "mods".
