Thanks for the info. I'll be using an older MC through a Marcoff battery-driven headamp into an old ARC SP-6, and driving Thiel 2.2's. I've got a 5300 coming and wondered what to expect.
If it doesn't work out, it will go into a second system with Counterpoint SA1000, and feeding very old (but very nice) KLH 5's.

Keep me posted- Harry.
Had a 555 for a while.Cheap binding posts.Traded them for the Kenwood LO7MK2.These I liked quite a bit more.Probably would never re-visit Adcom. $.02

The 555 was nearly unlistenable, in stock form.
the power supply was undersized, the grounding buss bars were chrome plated steel. I would pass on any of the earlier versions.
for similar money the later versions are better. Have modded a few 5400s. they were much better than the modded 555s.
have not heard the 5300 or 535....so can't comment on those.
Don't forget the passive parts can have a big effect on soncis as well as the active components.
For similar money, thought the Parasound series was usually better sonically.

Well I've received the 5300 and put it in my second system, where it sounds quite good when combined with my Counterpoint SA-1000 preamp. The amp really grabs hold of the bass and tightens it considerably; midrange is natural sounding and transparent; highs are sweet and extended. No harshness anywhere.
