The Monbrison has an mc phono stage and will handle mc cartridges from .2mv and up. It is an incredible preamp. I have the Auriges with the mm phono stage and I have never heard better preamps than the Shindo

And another poster said he need to use a SUT with that cartridge, with the Monbrison ... which the OP wants to avoid. Hence my suggestion of a diferent preamp - such as the tweaked Doge 8.

This is from the a report on the up graded Doge 8
" The upgrade allows the
phono section to accept moving coils with an output of .25 mV or greater, straight in, without
a step-up transformer.
So this wouldn't work either
Alan
From memory, I think I looked at the dB gain figure and concluded it should be fine.
Well, I guess those who decide to use absurdly LOMCs deserve the hassle they cause themselves! :-))

I don't know about the upgraded Doge, but the previous version had a pretty noisy FET MC stage. Objectionably noisy with my .25mV Denon.
The phono stage performed much better with an external SUT. With the latter it was quiet, though not as noise free as my ARC SP16.
I liked the Doge - a smooth, dynamic full bodied sound - but ultimately it didn't 'gel' in my system. Internal build quality/soldering was...well, 'dodgy'. Nowhere near the quality of the ARC in this respect.

Interesting that it should have been noisy. I have a JFET phono stage which is dead quiet ... though that's perhaps bcoz each channel is powered by 2 x 12v SLAs?

Andy
I think a FET head amp should be quiet - otherwise was is the point. To me it appeared to be an afterthought.

The other gentleman mentioned a Dyna 10.5 cartridge which has an output of 2.5mv which the Monbrisson should handle just fine. The op cartridge I agree would not be a good match for the Monbrisson, but I would still rather get a good stepup tranny and keep the Monbrisson then go for another preamp. The Shindo pre's and phono stages are quite special
Alan
Me, I would use a battery-powered head-amp than a SUT, any day. (Which I need to use for my 0.28mV Benz LP into my 34dB MM phono stage.)

Andy
Thank-you for your comments Alan. I love my Aurieges as-well as my Montille. I'd forgotten that Jack Roberts had reviewed both the Aurieges and the Monbrison. The additional expense for the Monbrison would be considerable but somewhat less-so if I factor in the cost of a separate phono and M.C. stage as well as 2 prs. of quality interconnects.I'm waiting for my Garrard 401 plinth to arrive from Jim Campbell and my tonearm to arrive from Thomas Schick.I'm pretty excited about having a vinyl set-up again after so many years.
