I generally agree with your review of the AI. I have had my M3A for about 4 yrs. now and I have never regretted this purchase. As others have mentioned, the AI is definitely not the worlds best preamp. I preferred the Hovland and the Wyetech Opal in my system but, considering that these units cost about 3 times that of the AI, it would be surprising if they were not superior. Still, the AI is outstanding value and undoubtedly one of the best buys in high-end audio.

Dear Terry:Thanks for the pat. Encouragement is encouraged.
I'm glad you are still enjoying your M3a. However the current-production M3a is a world'o'difference from the early M3a. They've beefed up the power supply, and they’ve done something to the volume controls and to the revised line stage to improve the preamp's drive capability. They also have redesigned their capacitors.
The difference is as day to night. The low bass is now lower and better controlled. The preamp is now capable of resolving fine-scale detail much better. It is better in its ability to generate large dynamic contrasts. And, finally, it is now even quieter than your otherwise nicely quiet model.
I agree with your observation that the M3a is a bargain; it’s comparable to the very best in many ways, but for a fraction of the cost. But I'm talking about the newest version. I was not prepared for the astounding improvement that I heard when my early M3a was updated. It's just another animal altogether. For the life of me, I don’t know why they continue to call it the M3a. They should probably call it something different; the M4 or the M3b, or the Klingon, or something.
If you decide to go ahead and have your unit updated, please keep my e-address. I'd love to hear what you think.
Thanks,
