if an 'X18' could do K12 "sound" but more spl and remain subjectively taut then would be fun imo - perhaps as PA box12CX with CD8 did OK and w. different tonal balance than w. Ti205 - not much "boom" - kick drum reasonably taut but not not as much jump factor as monster magnet - may be best bet for new driver and low $ - theres certain little "vortex-puff" sounds w. kick drum that can get lost if motor wimps out - another lb may have helped and maybe shorter overhang - can EQ put 'ol Humpty back in action?
Smith horn is worth hearing and probably buiiding - be great on disco or mono - at least you have wood damping on your side vs cowbells - be interesting to try some "lips" (like Westlake) clamped on to mouth hear effect
do you think those Selenium coax would work OK in K12/15? - on sale are about $100 than P-audio stuff
Follow Ups:
Yo Freddy,A quick sim with the selenium in a virtual K12 says 'pretty good'. I haven't looked at the 15" version. I have no idea how selenium drivers sound.
Do you have only one old EM coax for the K12s?
Smith horn would be for stereo. Might it be too diffuse? Just measured my quickie conical lashups and they're a bit wimpy from 300-1k or so. May need to go expo or tractrix after all to get ~5-7db more gain there. It could be my leaky throat though.
Horn resp was righton with 95db graph, 'cept the high end mass rolloff prediction.
got pair of heavy coax 12 so am set plus 2diff-EM sets 15 for X15/K15 - 95oz on all 15" ~80 on 12 (I think) need 10.1K drive in theare arrangement with klams on poles and convertible in living room12CX does OK w. CD8 - slightly diff sound & focus w. two common sand amps (80W vs 450W/channel)- could get it like banjo string (if not shock-wavey at low level) w. 450W - so 12CX with type one EM is OK in my book for anyone wantin' to muck w. Karlson (12CX work nice in X15)
Smith sound cool to me (better than limited experiece w. CD horn) vocals smooth and "everywhere" :^ )
how long would it take you to kludge 1-Smith from scrap? - will need 1" compression driver
btw - would U know "Those Darn Accordians" band mentioned by Paul Eizek? - can they handle Hendrix in full glory?

Guess you're all set then with 'vintage' EM coax. The Selenium might be better in a k12. Seems like the wimpy mag 12cx would be happier in the slightly bigger x15.
I thought I had the 2" throat smith horn plans, but must be imagining things. My fostex drivers seem to work best with a 2" throat, so they'd be contenders. Don't have any 1" CD's at the moment. What's the best cheap one?
The first time of anything takes a while, but I would think I could knock out a pair of smiths in a day (or two for finish). The plain conical sounds pretty good really, but I may tractrix one dimension to increase the gain 400-1k a few db. I gave up on trying to use a ribbon for supertweeter. Ribbons are neato but 75% useless.
I don't know TDA. Probably someone I know does. May have seen them and don't remember. Best accordion toting band in the world - and there's not even any contest: POLKACIDE.
x15 might be better in highs - was gonna say due to refined reflector but got feelin' slot flare could swing it either way - K12 is pretty fine and remarkable for 1950's monkey koffincheap compression driver = CD8/type one Eminence like from IMAGE at $32 ea. Dayton may be same unit ? - - -Ti205 has OK "tone" and decent subjective damping - rolls off a bit at 10K relative to EM but rattles out further (CD has has brickwall 13k drop) and is phatter on bottom (higher Qes?) - not sure which would be best w. KT90 pp - too bad someone can't do a 1" phenolic cheap w. decent phase-plug
when U and THOR' gonna have that Karlson-kookout with FF125???
