I travel a lot for work too. If I have time to look for records I usually go to the obvious record store and ask...even the hardcore locals will be generous with information if they know you are from out of town and won't be digging through their crates on a regular basis. I think the real key is in displaying respect for others and in not be a judgemental prick.....that has taken me far in life.
