It's perhaps a misnomer to speak of the 70s as the heyday of direct drive. Actually the best direct Drive designs came into use at the very end of the 1970s, when the use of a quartz reference for maintaining constant speed was first introduced. In my mind the very best direct drive turntables came after 1977 or 78. I don't know which company was the first to use quartz referencing. But all the turntables on my list posted elsewhere on this thread incorporate quartz referenced control of the drive. The difference between an SP 10 and an SP 10 mark 2 is quartz referencing. The original SP 10 did not have it. Sure, there were cheap direct drive turntables all along, just as there are cheap belt drive turntables to this day, but I think the reason was high demand and a huge marketplace for the product.
