What has helped me the most:
1) Make your best effort to isolate the table and make sure it's level.
2) Get a SERIOIUS tonearm.
I put this in caps because it made such an impact on my analog playback system that I literally stopped listening to CD's, by choice, and without looking back.
I was lucky enough to know Pete Riggle via a different project I was working on. He told me about his Woody tonearm, and asked if I was interested in trying it out at an intro price with full return privileges.
After setting it up I was stopped in my tracks. The sound that is extracted from those grooves is like nothing I have ever heard before, and I was raised with vinyl.
So, step one is very important, but step two is the gateway. Any cartridge will sound better when properly set up with a serious tonearm.
A moment of clarity for my ears!
