Fremer's review of the first of her two "one step" recordings ("The Moonlight Sessions") was something of a hatchet job. It was so unremittingly negative, and long to boot, that I posted on Fremer's website in Stanley's defense. I even went so far as to ask Fremer if somebody had shot his dog - it was that nasty a review. Well, Fremer's dog was safe and sound, but Fremer was unshakable. So I tried a different tack; In a subsequent post to his 'site, I compared Stanley's voice and interpretive style to several other artists. Basically, I said that while Stanley couldn't compare to Ella or Billie, I enjoyed her much more than Diana Krall (whom I found just plain boring). I concluded that for me, the best Stanley comparison was Julie London, and that one was a coin flip. To me that's a positive review. Not to her. She took umbrage at being told she wasn't as good as (arguably) the two best female jazz singers in history, returned my deposit on volume 2 of "Moonlight," and expelled me from the Lyn Stanley fan club. Seriously. So now what has she released? A two volume set tribute to...Julie London! Ironic, no?
