A few years ago I kept careful track of records played by simply noting the date and a hash mark for each LP side. At 20 minutes per side, three hash marks equals one hour. By keeping this record for 6 months or so, I reached an interesting conclusion. With my all-vinyl system and my listening habits, I had a remarkably consistent average of around 30 hours per month taking into account trips away from home, etc. Now that I know this, I no longer need to keep track of the total. I just figure 350-400 hours per year.

As far as stylus wear is concerned, my experience is a high quality stylus lasts 1000-1200 hours which in my case means a retip every 3 years. I have a Benz LP which has been retipped twice by SoundSmith. Each time they confirmed the stylus was indeed worn and due for replacement. For a quality MC like the Benz, SoundSmith does a "retip only" meaning they remove the worn stylus tip and attach a new one on the same cantilever. This costs more than getting a whole new cantilever/stylus assembly but it assures the same sound quality as the original cartridge. At least that has been my experience.
