Jim Howard also polished the spindle and it uses a ceramic bearing. No guarantee that yours will ever become quiet, but it's worth the effort. I also have the cavity where the motor unit sits lined with Dynamat as well as the plate interface with the plinth. The plinth I built uses alternating layers of 3/4" baltic birch and MDF. I found the idler wheel did the most for getting the noise down. Here is a link for the idler wheel I ended up with, expensive but it did the trick. It also brought the speed up to 33.3, all the other wheels seemed to run a bit slow.
