Back in 1969, when I was 5 years old, my father was a flight navigator in the Navy, stationed in Japan. His squadron's mission was to fly reconnaissance missions over the coasts of North Korea, China, and the USSR. In April of that year, he lost half his squadron, and some of his best friends, when their plane was shot down in international waters off the coast of North Korea.

According to my father, his squadron rotated men each week. Half would go on the mission, and the other half would stay at the base. It was my father's turn to stay.

One of the deceased servicemen had attended a party at our house and he left behind a couple of albums at our house, Magical Mystery Tour and The Times They Are a Changin'. In the ensuing years, I took an interest in both, but I really liked listening to MMT, which was played mostly on my sister's Fisher Price record player. I feel that the spirit of my dad's friend was in that record, and it is most responsible for my love of music today.

While that copy of MMT is long gone, the Dylan record is still in my collection today. I play it now and then. I feel melancholy when I listen to it, knowing for me that it is associated with such a sad time. Those brave men were never able to experience the summer of 69.
