Hi Steve, this sounds interesting. Your two "new to you" finds were amazing deals.
I never heard of the Pioneer PI-70 (PL-70?) and the JVC I only know by reading comments. The PL-10 has a great reputation, but the 70 looks to have very steady speed in the video link. The JVC has a bit of discussion on Audiogon Analog. Many owners set them up plinthless, using only pillar supports, but there is controversy over that.
I think you'll find the 401 will be supported by the rim drive school while the JVC will be picked by those favoring DD. Not knowing about the PI-70 I can't guess, although it may be DD too.
