I faced the same decision earlier this year...

I was deciding between the new Technics or the VPI. Both are great turntables and are exactly as Curious has described. I ended up buying a Walnut plinth VPI Prime.

The decision came down to whether I wanted to upgrade my turntable. Owning a VPI is a real joy if you intend to upgrade your turntable down the road. The VPI is made beautifully and you have a long list of upgrades available to you.

I have done upgrades to the drive system, tonearm, end of LP lift, phono ICs, dust cover, etc. I can upgrade the Prime to a Rosewood Prime Signature (something I have been considering) and maybe even higher in the product line.

VPI is about to release its own phono preamp, which is supposed to be something special, they are going to release a 2nd tonearm pod which allows the addition of any other tonearm you wish (IIRC) and they always have something else in the works.

If you buy a VPI you get into a product line that can grow with you as you are able to upgrade. VPI also stands by its products. I thought I had a problem with my Prime and talked to Mat, the owner, for about 30 minutes about the issue. It turned out to be something else and the Prime was fine. I called Mat back, let him know what the problem was and we gabbed for a while.

VPI are great people and produce a fine product. Technics is a great turntable but you get what you get with the Technics. With VPI you get a great product, made in the USA, that has great support and a growth path you rarely find.

I guess you can figure out my opinion,
Ed
