Since I manufacture upgraded bearings for these two turntables please accept these opinions on what I heard in my own system regarding the two turntables in question.

If you have a small listening room and full range speakers the SL1710 will sound more lively. The SL1200 sounds more damped in this environment.

If you have a mid or large listening room and full range speakers the SL1200 can be amazing platform.

Kevin at KAB sells a number of quality upgrades for this turntable and its overall fidelity and full frequency range make it my personal favorite.

I own an SL1200 and a couple of SP 15's. If you want higher fidelity sound the SP 15 is highly recommended. It has the same moment of inertia as the respected SP 10MKII and is much easier to play with as a summer project.

I consider the SL1200 the easier tweeker model. It is fairly easy to adapt different tonearms should you ever desire experiment.
