I wasn't quite saying that modern players "solved" the problem, but do find later players to sound "good enough" with or without the green pen that there's less need for the green pen. I do, however, still regularly use an Audio prism green light CD mat, which emits a florescent green light, giving a similar effect without needing to permanently mark the CD.

I liked the purple pen's effect, too, which was applied alternating between green and purple along the edge of the CD, as suggested by some British article I read several decades ago. (Was it Peter Belt?) The black pen I haven't tried, though I also tried things like stickers on the CD. Those were the days.
