I am not one who usually hears too much difference in tubes (they are generally either good or not good to me), so this is a little surprising.
I have a pair of Radiocraftsman RC-2 that use 6J5 as the input tube. I have tried a lot of different things in that slot - 6J5 metal, 6J5G, 6J5GT, 6L5G, 6P5GT, 7193 (with adapter), 76 (with adapter), L63 and so on, and what seem to sound the best is the lowly 6C5 metal tube.
The very best of those is an older RCA pair with a "button cap" on top (date code XE4).
Everything just sounds a little cleaner and clearer with those.
Might just be a match with the amps, might just be that specific pair, might just be my particular setup, might just be my ears - who knows and who can predict.
I have found that it never hurts to to try something new (or old) and different (as long as it is electrically compatible of course).
