A tube tester is not going to give you the whole story. I found tubes that test good but not sound good. Also tubes that test mediocre but sound fine. But initially, a tube tester at least gives you some benchmark.
I am usually testing different amps so i try to keep everything the same everywhere else in the signal chain, tubes especially. My preamp stays the same throughout and it uses a pair of 6sn7. Initially, i tried a bunch of different and finally settled on a pair of NOS 5692 which are designed to have a 10k hour lifespan. I am not even half way there. So, all the tubes stay the same until i hear something odd.
