I replaced one 5AR4 with another one time just for kicks and heard a difference. I always figured it just passed more or less voltage and shifted the operating point a bit. I've also used a 5R4 and 5U4 in the same amp, but they all sound the same. I have a 1950s vintage DuMont branded 5U4 in it now, this tube is an original from a Dumont TV that was in regular use into the 2000's so very well used and still kicking.
