The middle letters were assigned more or less in order (rectifiers in reverse, from "Z"), but the single-ended tubes introduced in 1938-41 were an exception. The single letters had mostly run out. Many single-ended tubes were assigned "S" plus the letter of its top-cap predecessor, with SN7 being "somewhat" like the earlier 6N7 dual triode. So if you knew what a 6K7 was, you knew what the "new" 6SK7 was.
