One idea ran through my head when he was explaining the reasoning behind his use of RF AC to heat DHT filaments (RF to avoid hum). Maybe, if you apply DC to a filament who's design is to emit electrons, the end to which is connected to the negative source is better able to boil off the excess electrons flowing to this point, whereas the end of the filament attached to the (+) lead of the power supply is starved for those same electrons, resulting in uneven emissions from the cathode? I don't have a clue if that's the case, but it was what occurred to me at the time.
