Versus the "standard" for "master tapes", 15ips, I found that there is a lot of difference between 7-1/2 and 3-3/4 ips but not so much between 15 and 7-1/2.
You didn't mention if your machine is 2-track (half track stereo) versus quarter track. 2-track is quite a bit better than 4-track.
That said, most tapes out there are quarter track at both lower speeds. 2-tracks were only available from maybe 1953 thru 60; are expensive and the genres are limited to classical, jazz and "popular" (for that time period). No rock!
