I would avoid the cheaper eq's like the sub $100 (msrp) ones that can be had on e-Bay/CL for $25-50. They will add a noticable amount of "hiss".

The better one's are from AudioControl (I owned a Bijou 5 channel, wish I still had it), Rane, etc. Much more $$$ but worth it. I now use an H/K EQ-8 between my 520 and the OPPO and there's no audible hiss at all. I also manually adjust the EQ in my 59txi.

There will always be debate on whether eq's do more harm than good but if your system is of modest price, serious room improvements are not practicle and your speaker/receiver/source player are not an absolutely perfect match then I think a good eq can be usefull.
