Let's not confuse powered speakers (internal amps) with active speakers (direct connection of amp to driver). The former may be active or passive, but the latter must use an active crossover and more importantly, does not dictate internal amps. Others have mentioned outboard amps. This is probably the best solution for an active system, and the answer to the objection of not having a choice of amps and internal vibrations. An active system provides many advantages over a passive, lower levels of distortion, more efficient use of amp power, more precise and consistent crossover, and the amps' direct control of the drivers.
