Dave,I was going to suggest the MMGs as well. I don't suffer the same harshness that you mentioned with my Ascend Acoustic speakers, but that could be do to personal taste or listening environment.
Here's a revew on Soundstage about a new offering from Magnepan that is just as economical as the Ascends and might fit your preferences...
