I would tend to agree - the design is pretty old school and though the parts used were decent quality there certainly is room for improvement. FWIW, I used Hammond 1627SE output iron, audio grade caps, all carbon comp resistors, wiring is teflon jacket, and an Alps Black Beauty potentiometer - haven't been able to find a spare so if anything goes wrong with it, maybe a Blue Velvet could be used. I need to find my original notebook so I can find all the design specs - think B+ is fairly hot come to think of it but the Sovtek was getting reviews as being a tough tube at the time.

OTOH, it has been 10 years since I did any amp work so I am loathe to go in and muck around with something that took a couple months of tweaking to work properly wrt hum and extraneous signal pickup. So on the assumption that there may be better tubes available now I figured I'd ask. Most of the really good reviews I've been able to find of the Sovteks date from when I built this beast. For now, I just retubed the rectifier with a Sovtek coke-bottle 5U4G and put in a spare set of Sovtek 2A3's (the 6SL7's were replaced when I got it out of storage) so its running on fresh tubes now.

Looks like either the JJ or the EH is on the "to do" list, but only after I update the driver tubes. Still researching what the implications of each change would be. The JJ's look really interesting if they are indeed 300B's set up for 2.5V heaters.

Haven't even gotten to the speakers - I would really like to go with Fostex 168 Sigmas, but again I'm just getting back into this and need to get my DIY shop up and running again before I tackle a project like that.

Thanks everyone!
