I bought a cheap external CD/DVD drive to use with a Macbook when traveling, paid @$25 for one with USB 3.0 connection from amazon.

I've tested it plugged into my iMac and it imports CDs into iTunes with no problems. The brand I bought is Govee but there are lots of similarly priced options. I checked the specs of the internal mechanism and it's the same device that is used in many popular laptops with internal CD/DVD drives.
