Digitizing vinyl must preserve the characteristics of the medium, that is, digitizing cannot restore the original master tape or whatever.

Perhaps it cynical to think of this way but digitized vinyl preserves the filtering effect of the vinyl medium itself: if you prefer the filtering effect of vinyl, you are going to prefer the digitized vinyl to the pure digital.

But I think one drawn to conclude that digital per se probably does less to distort the sound than the process the created the vinyl.
